2 shot, including officer, in Memphis hotel (AP)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? Memphis police say a police officer and another person were shot at a hotel in the middle of a downtown tourist district packed for the Fourth of July holiday. A suspect is in custody.

Officers responded to a call of shots being fired around 7 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel. The stricken officer was taken in extremely critical condition to Regional Medical Center.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. and Police Director Tony Armstrong said it appeared to begin as a domestic incident. The names of the officer and other victim have not been released, pending notification of their families.

The hotel sits at a busy intersection adjacent to the historic Peabody hotel and the Memphis Redbirds minor-league stadium, where a game was being played and fireworks were planned afterward.
