Chinese dissident convicted of subversion

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Chinese dissident Chen Xi was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for inciting subversion by a southern Chinese court on Monday, according to media reports which cited independent sources. A court in the southern city of Guiyang ruled Chen was guilty of "incitement to subvert state power'' for three dozen essays he wrote and published online, according to a report by Associated Press, which cited his wife, Zhang Qunxuan, during a telephone interview. The court finding is the second time in a few days that a veteran Chinese activist has been convicted of similar charges and sentenced to a multi-year jail sentence. Chen reportedly maintains his innocence but will not appeal the verdict, according to the report, citing Zhang. Attempts by journalists to contact the Chinese court directly were unsuccessful.
