Iran warns U.S. over Strait of Hormuz (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said on Thursday the United States was not in a position to tell Tehran "what to do in the Strait of Hormuz," state television reported, after the U.S. said it would preserve oil shipments in the Gulf.

Tehran's threat to block traffic through the crucial passage for Middle Eastern crude suppliers followed the European Union's decision to tighten sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, as well as accompanying moves by the United States to tighten unilateral sanctions.

Iran's English-language Press TV quoted Hossein Salami as saying: "Any threat will be responded by threat ... We will not relinquish our strategic moves if Iran's vital interests are undermined by any means."

Separately, Salami was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency: "Americans are not in a position whether to allow Iran to close off the Strait of Hormuz."

The U.S. Fifth Fleet said on Wednesday it would not allow any disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a strip of water separating Oman and Iran.

At loggerheads with the West over its nuclear program, Iran said earlier it would stop the flow of oil through the strait if sanctions were imposed on its crude exports.

The Iranian threat pushed up international oil prices on Tuesday although they slipped back on Wednesday in thin trade.

Analysts say that Iran could potentially cause havoc in the Strait of Hormuz which connects the biggest Gulf oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. At its narrowest point, it is 21 miles across.

But its navy would be no match for the firepower of the Fifth Fleet which consists of 20-plus ships supported by combat aircraft, with 15,000 people afloat and another 1,000 ashore.

This is not the first time the Iranians have threatened to disrupt the oil flow in the Gulf, including in 2008 and 2010 when Iran talked about shutting the Strait as retaliation for any military strike on the country's nuclear sites.

Neither the United States nor Israel have ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to resolve a long-running dispute over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

Israel, widely believed to have the Middle East's only atomic arsenal, has described Iran's nuclear program as a threat to its existence. Iran refuses to recognize Israel.

Tehran says it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity. Iran has been hit by foreign sanctions, including four rounds of U.N. sanctions, over its refusal to halt its sensitive nuclear work.

To show off its military capabilities, Iran launched a 10-day large-scale naval wargames in the Gulf on Saturday.

Iran's state television reported on Thursday the country's surveillance plane filmed a U.S. aircraft carrier during the drill.

"We have filmed and photographed a U.S. aircraft carrier as it was entering the Gulf of Oman," said Iran's Navy Chief Habibollah Sayyari. "The area is under our full control."

HBT: Cubs want young pitching for Garza

It?s quite clear by now that the Cubs are going to trade Matt Garza this winter as part of a larger rebuilding effort. Where he will land, of course, is yet to be determined. But here?s a hint:

source:

The Red Sox have also shown serious interest in Garza, and would do well to add a quality starter to their bleeding staff, but they don?t have the kind of pitching prospects that the Blue Jays and Yankees do. Guys like Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, Noah Syndergaard and Justin Nicolino.

Garza, 28, registered a 3.32 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 31 starts this past season for the Cubs, fanning 197 batters and walking only 63 in 198 innings of work. He?s arbitration-eligible for two more years.

European stocks edge up, euro stuck before Italy auction (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? European stocks crept higher on Tuesday, catching the tailwind of a pre-holiday U.S. rally, while the euro was hamstrung by the prospect of a large Italian debt auction later in the week.

Oil prices were buoyed by positive U.S. jobs and housing data late last week as well as the prospect of sanctions against Syria choking off production there.

At 1130 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index of top European shares was up 0.2 percent at 992 points. Stock markets in Britain, Hong Kong and Australia remained closed.

Asian shares eased as investors squared positions before U.S. markets reopen after a long weekend, leaving the MSCI world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) fractionally higher on the day.

U.S. stock futures pointed to a steady start on Wall Street.

"With U.S. and European players in holiday mood, there is no incentive except for year-end position adjustments," said Hirokazu Yuihama, senior strategist at Daiwa Capital Markets.

"But concerns about euro zone debt will resurface ... with the focus on refinancing needs facing Italy and Spain, and whether sovereign yields of these countries would shoot above levels considered unsustainable," he said.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) slipped 0.3 percent and has shed 17 percent so far this year. It has underperformed the pan-European index, which is down 12 percent. Japan's Nikkei stock average (.N225) closed down 0.5 percent and has also lost 17 percent this year.

The euro traded at $1.3075, little changed on the day. A fall below $1.2945, a level touched earlier in the month, would take the single currency to its weakest since January.

German government bond futures were up 33 ticks due to investors seeking safe harbour ahead of Thursday's Italian debt auction to raise up to 8.5 billion euros via three- and 10-year bonds.

"I think there could be some downside risks for the euro. (Thursday's auction) will be more of a test of the market, given that the bonds auctioned are longer maturities," said Sverre Holbek, currency strategist at Danske in Copenhagen.

"A further rise in Italian yields should almost certainly be euro negative, and thin liquidity may exacerbate the move."

Italian 10-year borrowing costs rose 8 basis points on the day to 7.10 percent, a level viewed as unsustainable in the long-run for a country facing a national debt of around 120 percent of GDP. It faces around 150 billion euros of debt refinancing in February-April alone.

HOPES FOR U.S.

After upbeat U.S. reports last week, investors will be looking for more positive signs when the S&P Case-Shiller house price index for October and consumer confidence data for December are released later on Tuesday.

U.S. holiday season retail sales were expected to rise 3.8 percent to a record $469.1 billion, the National Retail Federation said, slower than last year's growth but stronger than its pre-season forecast.

Brisk sales would reinforce signs the U.S. economy is recovering, following data showing the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits hit a 3-1/2-year low in the week before Christmas while new U.S. single-family home sales rose to a seven-month high.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) broke through its 200-day moving average on Friday after a four-day rally lifted the index into positive territory for the year.

U.S. crude oil futures and gold have been among the top performing assets in 2011, with year-to-date rises of about 9 percent and 12 percent respectively.

Brent crude rose slightly to trade above $108, supported by supply disruptions in Syria and Iranian naval exercises in a key shipping lane, while improved U.S. home sales data and year-end short-covering also supported prices.

Arab League peace monitors arrived in the Syrian city of Homs on Tuesday for a first look after tanks were seen leaving the hotbed of anti-government unrest where hundreds have been killed during nine months of military crackdowns on protesters.

Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Alao said on Saturday that his country's oil production had fallen by about 30 to 35 percent as a result of sanctions imposed on Syria over its nine-month crackdown on anti-government protests.

"Syria could be a support factor for the time being, but we will not see a big climb or rocket high prices because of that," Ken Hasegawa, a derivatives manager with brokerage Newedge in Tokyo, said.

Gold hovered around $1,600 an ounce, as investors stayed on the sidelines in the final week of the year.

"Hot" Sandra Bullock Dines in Wyoming With Louis, Sister, Male Pals (omg!)

"Hot" Sandra Bullock Dines in Wyoming With Louis, Sister, Male Pals

It wasn't the North Pole, but it sure was chilly for Louis Bardo Bullock and his mom Sandra Bullock in Jackson Hole, Wyoming two days before Christmas!

The actress, 47, was spotted coming in from the cold with her little boy -- who turns 2 in January --? at the trendy Rendezvous Bistro Dec. 23 for an early dinner.

VIDEO: Why Sandra isn't ready to date again

But the Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close star wasn't the only grown-up at the corner booth for that pre-Christmas Eve dinner: Bullock was joined by her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, an older gentleman and two men in their 30s and 40s. (According to an onlooker, Bullock was strictly platonic with all of the men present.)

With understated makeup and sunglasses on her head, the Oscar-winning mom wore all black: black leather pants, sweater, scarf, boots and fur-lined parka, with her auburn locks swept up into a messy updo.

PHOTOS: Louis and other adorable Hollywood tots of 2011

Once little Louis warmed up from the cold outside, he giggled throughout the hour-long meal as the small group doted on him and his mom bounced him on her lap.

Serene and happy (she shared a grilled cheese with Louis and sipped her own glass of red wine), Bullock looked "very hot!" and "maternal," according to a fellow diner.

PHOTOS: Sandra's new life as a single mom

Later on in the meal, Louis played with other youngsters -- two blonde toddler girls! -- dining across the way.

Bullock recently admitted on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno that her little boy is a huge "flirt" who "appreciates the fairer sex."

"He doesn't flirt with me like that, and someone told me that's probably a good thing," she joked. "He's got a look where he just cuts the eyes at the ladies, and I'm like, 'I'm so sorry! I don't know what's happening.'"

Iraq agrees to move Iran exiles; rockets hit camp

(AP) ? The United Nations and the Iraqi government agreed to relocate several thousand Iranian exiles living in a camp in northeastern Iraq, potentially averting a showdown with its residents. The dissidents, who have not said whether they would agree to move, reported a rocket attack on the camp.

The People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, one-time allies of Saddam Hussein in a common fight against Iran, said Katyusha rockets struck near housing units inside the camp on Sunday night, but did not report any casualties.

A representative of the camp's residents said Monday they were still waiting to see the agreement before commenting on whether they would decide to relocate or not.

"We hope that it would officially include the minimum assurances so that it would be acceptable to Ashraf residents," said Shahin Gobadi. "Ashraf residents have repeatedly emphasized that they would in no way accept forcible relocation."

Since Saddam's overthrow, Iraq's new leaders have improved relations with Iran and have sought to shut down the camp, home to 3,400 residents and located in barren terrain northeast of Baghdad about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Iranian border. The U.N. reported that at least 34 people were killed in a raid by Iraqi government forces in April.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq announced an agreement Sunday night that establishes a process to move the residents of Camp Ashraf to a temporary location. It did not give a timeline for the move or specify the new location.

A statement from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the residents would be moved to Camp Liberty, a former U.S. military base near the Baghdad International Airport.

At Camp Liberty, the U.N.'s refugee agency will interview the residents to determine their eligibility to get refugee status, before they can eventually be resettled in third countries, Clinton said.

"We are encouraged by the Iraqi government's willingness to commit to this plan, and expect it to fulfill all its responsibilities," she said in the statement. "To be successful, this resettlement must also have the full support of the camp's residents, and we urge them to work with the U.N. to implement this relocation."

The People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran first moved to Camp Ashraf during the regime of Saddam, who saw the group as a convenient ally against Tehran. The group is committed to the overthrow of the Iranian regime.

The group carried out a series of bombings and assassinations against Iran's clerical regime in the 1980s and fought alongside Saddam's forces in the Iran-Iraq war. But the group says it renounced violence in 2001. U.S. soldiers disarmed them during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been determined to close down the camp by the end of December. His government considers the camp as an affront to Iraq's sovereignty.

Last week, an Iraqi government spokesman said the government was working out a solution to the situation at Camp Ashraf with the U.N. and would allow the camp to stay open into January as residents are being relocated. At the time, representatives of the residents suggested they would be willing to move, as long as their security was provided for.

Under the agreement outlined by the U.N., the international organization will monitor the relocation process and then a team from the U.N.'s refugee agency will be deployed at the new location to process the refugee claims.

Officials from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad will also visit regularly, the State Department said.

The Iraqi government will be responsible for the exiles' safety during that time, and will have a liaison officer from the Ministry of Human Rights involved in the relocation, the U.N. said.

"I would like to highlight that the government is exclusively responsible for the safety and security of the residents both during their transfer and in the new location until they leave the country," said Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq.

The Iraqi government's vow to close Camp Ashraf had raised concerns that forcibly removing its residents would result in violence.

The People's Mujahedeen has been branded a foreign terrorist organization by the United States, a designation now under review by the State Department. It has been removed from similar blacklists in Europe.
