COMMENTARY | As Plugged-In is reporting all video game consoles suffered meager sales in December, but the little white box that brought indoor bowling to all sorts of gamers suffered the most. As the report states, the Nintendo Wii suffered a 55 percent decline in sales, which means the Wii is probably on its way out. Of course, as the Los Angeles Times reports the Wii has found its way into nearly 40 million homes in the United States, which is an impressive accomplishment. However, the Wii U is set to put Nintendo back on top.
As CNET reports, Nintendo was relatively quiet with details surrounding the Wii U at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. The report even goes so far as to hint that the design of the console is not even final yet, but Nintendo had better get things together to get some positive buzz surrounding the console. Still, the Wii U, as CNET mentions, will take advantage of proven hits for Nintendo like Zelda and Mario.
It is hard to count Nintendo out of any console race, and the touch screen controller that is accompanying the Wii U should represent a sign fact step forward. It has to, because the future of the company is at stake, and not just first place in the next generation of video game consoles.
Like the Los Angeles Times article suggests, flagging Wii sales are no reason for Nintendo to worry, because the heir-apparent is nearly ready to fly. CES was a place for Nintendo to get ready for other shows later this year, which will likely provide spec, price and release date information.
The Wii had a few years in the sun, and it was a bright and interesting device. Now Nintendo needs to prove it was not a fluke, and the Wii U could do just that.
