David Mamet political comedy opens Studio season ? Minnesota ...

The Department of Theatre & Dance will open the 2012-13 season with David Mamet?s ?November.?

2012-08-29
Minnesota State, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance News Release 8-29-2012

?The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance will open its 2012-13 seasons with David Mamet?s ?November,? 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19-22 in the Andreas Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts. It is the first show of the Studio season.

It?s November in a Presidential election year and incumbent Charles Smith?s chances for re-election are looking grim. Approval ratings are down, his money?s running out and nuclear war might be imminent. With Pulitzer Prize-winning Mamet?s characteristic no-holds-barred style, ?November? is a scathingly hilarious take on the state of America today and the lengths to which people will go to win. This is its Minnesota State Mankato debut; it contains mature language and themes.

Individual tickets for ?November? are $10 regular, $9 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more, $8 for current Minnesota State students. Individual tickets for this show, as well as all shows in the season, go on sale Monday, Sept. 17, at MSUTheatre.com

The Theatre & Dance Box Office will be open 4-6 p.m. in the lobby of the Earley Center for Performing Arts that day. Subscriptions are also on sale for the 2012-13 Mainstage season.

Mitt Romney's health care plan: Pre-existing conditions ? The Chart ...

The?Empowered Patient?is a regular feature from CNN Senior Medical News Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen that helps put you in the driver's seat when it comes to health care.

This week during the Republican convention I?ll be dissecting Mitt Romney?s health care plan, examining what it means to various groups of American patients.

Monday, we put preventive care under the microscope. Tuesday, we're looking at Romney's plan for helping people with pre-existing conditions - anything from back pain to cancer to diabetes - who have often been denied insurance? or asked to pay exorbitant premiums.

Obamacare requires insurance companies to?sell policies to?people with pre-existing conditions without charging a higher premium.

Romney has vowed he would act to repeal Obamacare?on his first day as president. Instead, he says he would "prevent discrimination against individuals with pre-existing conditions who maintain continuous coverage," according to his website.

When asked by CNN how Romney defined "continuous coverage," his spokeswoman Andrea Saul did not answer.

In a May 2011 speech in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Romney spoke broadly about the concept.

?If you've been insured for 10 years, and you have a heart attack, and you've changed jobs, because of that continuous period of insurance, of course you will continue to be covered," he said. "If you've never had insurance, and you're age 55, and suddenly you have a heart attack, and now you want to buy insurance - you don't say to them: 'Oh, fine, you get it.' ... That doesn't work very well.?

For people with pre-existing conditions who do not yet have insurance, states would be able to pursue a number of different approaches, such as high-risk pools and insurance exchanges, according to Saul.

Fiscal cliff vs. tax-cut extension is gloom or doom. Is there another way?

CBO's 'gloom' scenario means pushing the economy off the 'fiscal cliff' into recession. But deficits would plunge. 'Doom' means no recession but dangerous levels of debt.

By Roberton Williams,?Guest blogger / August 27, 2012

Congressional Budget Office projections suggest that the 'fiscal cliff' would push the US economy into recession, but deficits would plunge by 2016. Avoiding that scenario, however, could mean moving to dangerous levels of debt.

Gloom is what happens if the tax increases and government spending cuts scheduled to arrive in January actually occur. CBO says that would drive the economy back into recession in 2013 and push unemployment above 9 percent. But there?s some sunshine too: the federal deficit would drop sharply?by nearly half in 2013 alone?and would be under 1 percent of GDP by 2016 (dark blue bars in graph). The federal debt would decline from 73 percent of GDP this year to 59 percent in 2022. And the economy would resume growing in a year or so. Long-term gain for short term pain.

Doom occurs if Congress and the president agree to extend all of the expiring tax cuts and postpone the scheduled spending cuts for the next ten years. Short-term extension would prevent renewed economic collapse?the economy would maintain its slow growth and unemployment would continue its slow downward trend. But deficits would fall much less (the sum of the bars in the graph) and government debt would climb to nearly 90 percent of GDP in 2022.

Gloom and Doom aren?t new to the scene. Our recovery from the great recession has crawled at a painfully slow pace and any fiscal hit could stop it in its tracks. When faced with expiring tax cuts in 2010, President Obama and Congress agreed to extend the cuts through 2012, buying time for the recovery at a cost of two more annual deficits exceeding a trillion dollars. That set the stage for this year?s fiscal cliff.

Meanwhile we?ve had ample warning about our deficit and debt problems. Cutting taxes without controlling spending has proved to be a sure recipe for growing debt. Add burgeoning costs of Medicare and Medicaid, the demographic bulge of baby boomers collecting Social Security, and the cost of two wars, and the debt had to rise?and at an increasing pace. CBO has warned for years about the looming fiscal crisis, even before the recession piled on costs and slashed revenues.

We don?t really have to choose between Gloom and Doom. Combining smaller, well-timed parts of each would be a better alternative. We just need to figure out how to segue from not squelching our nascent economic recovery in the short run to accepting the fiscal discipline required to control deficits and bring down our national debt.

CBO?s update isn?t news. It?s just another reminder that we can?t continue to spend too much and tax too little, despite what presidential and congressional candidates might want us to think.

Mayor Calls Homeless Shelters "Pleasurable" Experience

Responding to stats showing that families with children are staying in shelters 30 percent longer than last year, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that city shelters are now so ?pleasurable? that residents don?t want to leave, says the New York Daily News.

?We have made our shelter system so much better that, unfortunately, when people are in it ? or fortunately, depending on what your objective is ? it is a much more pleasurable experience than they ever had before,? Bloomberg said on Thursday.

The mayor believes there is ?less pressure on people to move out? since the shelter system has been overhauled.

Actual shelter residents, though, tell a much different story.

?This is the slummiest place you can imagine,? Chanel Sykes, 35, a resident of Fort Greene?s Auburn shelter, told the paper. Sykes shares a room with her husband and eight children ranging from 5 months to 11 years old.

?I?ve been to prison. This is just like prison,? said David Buntin, 35, who arrived at Auburn with his four kids earlier this month.

In July, Patch talked to Bed-Stuy residents who were growing impatient with unemployment and met Carl, who says he sleeps at a shelter in a chair with his head resting on a hard desk ? not even a bed.

City shelters are already at their highest capacity in history, said a new report released this week, and some are struggling to meet the demand.

Anthony Butler, executive director of St. John?s Bread and Life food pantry in Bed-Stuy told Patch on Thursday that they?ve ?seen a huge uptick in the number of immigrant families in need of our services.?

According to the Daily News, Coalition for the Homeless Executive Director Mary Brosnahan called Bloomberg?s comments ?shocking and offensive,? while Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said the mayor is ?living in a fantasy world.?

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Launch Event Features Kate Upton And Her? White iPhone

Advertisements

Samsung has thrown a launch party in New York City for its latest tablet release, the Galaxy Note 10.1. As is always the case with glitzy events like this, there were plenty of B-list celebrities and models in attendance, with Kate Upton amongst other in attendance.

As is to be expected, photos have begun circulating around the internet of the Samsung event and, understandably, Kate Upton features in one or two of them. The problem is, eagle-eyed tech fans have noticed that there is one itsy bitsy problem ? one photo of Upton shows her white iPhone 4 or 4S, clear as day, all shiny and stuff.

Kate-Upton-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-10point1-Launch-Event-New-York-August-15-2012-2

Now obviously this doesn?t mean a great deal in the scheme of things, and Samsung?s bigwigs probably don?t care one jot what smartphone a random model uses, even if she happens to be photographed with Samsung?s logo plastered all over the wall behind her. Other than being mildly amusing for those of us in the tech world, we doubt anyone will even notice.

What?s interesting though is that anyone even noticed in the first place. The images cropped up on a celeb. spotting website and have since been picked up by the likes of Jim Dalrymple. The internet seems very pleased with itself that a party-goer at a Samsung event happens to own an Apple product. They seem to think that it?s one in the eye for those iPhone copying Apple wannabes. In reality, it?s nothing of the sort.

Kate-Upton-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-10point1-Launch-Event-New-York-August-15-2012-1 (1)

With Apple and Samsung currently dragging each other through any court that is willing to have them, and the diehard iPhone and Android fans all too eager to take pot shots at each other, should the tech world in general really be stooping so low as to point out someone has an iPhone at a Samsung event? Really?

Once was a time that kids grew up and poked fun at each other based on the football team they followed, or the cars they liked. Nowadays, owning a smartphone is akin to being part of a gang, with anyone packing a different brand instantly becoming the enemy. A cursory glance at any social network, be it Facebook, Twitter or Google+, will show just how eager both sides of the divide are to wage war on the other. Remember, this is a smartphone, not a life ch0ice.

Unfortunately, this battle between "iSheep" and "Phandroids" seems to be here to stay. That?s fine, but as the tech press, can we not rise above it and admit that great tech is great tech?

Maybe we should grow up? Just a little, not too much!

How To Approach Home Improvement The Successful Way ...

Working on home improvement projects involve many different things to each person doing them. Some people are simply tired of their home?s current look. Some just want to boost property values. And others simply love home improvements and find working on their home fun and relaxing. Regardless of why you are interested in home improvement, you should read these tips and start planning your next project.

Talk to anyone that your home renovation project may impact, including the people who live next door to you. Next-door construction can be very irritating and distracting. You will enhance neighborly goodwill by letting your neighbors know what will be going on so they are not unpleasantly surprised or inconvenienced.

TIP! You want to make your house unique but not too unique from other houses; if you do, yours might be considered gaudy. You don?t want to stick out as the only homeowner on the cul-de-sac with a tower on top of your home.

Use fruit and flowers to add fresh energy to your kitchen. Beautifully arranged flowers and fruit look great in any kitchen. This is an inexpensive fix and will brighten up the kitchen instantly. Seeing a vase of fresh flowers on even the dullest of days will instantly improve both the kitchen and your mood!

Vinyl decks are becoming more popular with homeowners. Be sure to clean off the deck at least twice a year so that you can keep getting plenty of enjoyment out of it for years to come. The best seasons to clean your vinyl deck are spring and fall.

Tailoring pillows to suit a teenager?s tastes is not that hard. Sew some old band shirts, old jeans, and shirts with neat logos around your decorative pillows. This adds a nice personal touch to any room, giving it an entirely new personality.

TIP! If you are in a rush to get home improvement work done, you should be prepared for the high costs involved. You can usually find someone who will happily take on the project.

If you are not happy with home improvements completed by a contractor, do not hesitate to complain. Begin with the contractor individually, and inform him of the contract clauses that were violated. If that doesn?t solve anything, send a letter by registered mail. After that, you should call the consumer protection office in your area and see if they can help.

One great idea for adding significant value to your house is to add roller shutters or aluminum shutters. This renovation is great in hurricane zones, but also offers added security for vacation properties that may be empty for long periods.

To get a basement that looks better, think of staining the floors. Staining is a less expensive way to greatly improve the look of your concrete floors. The stain will also help the floors last longer and you won?t have as much trouble wiping them down. Find a stain to boost the shine and lustre. This will allow your floors to look great, like they cost more than they really do.

TIP! Always obtain the proper permits for any improvement projects involving electricity, structural changes, plumbing or any other major alterations. If you can?t figure it out, talk to someone at the city council or get a contractor on board.

If you are considering a renovation on your home that adds a personalized aspect, think about the value and return that the investment will make. By nature, a design feature that is personal to you is less likely to feel personal for someone else, and therefore, it may deter interested parties from buying your home.

Add a water filtration system for an easy project that will increase the value of your home. This is actually a simple improvement you can in a few hours. There are units that can be installed under the kitchen sink that will filter your sink water.

Home improvement is something that applies to everyone from time to time. No matter how the idea starts, we all are driven by some particular goal. Some people choose projects to increase their home?s value and other?s just want a more updated look; whatever the reason, home improvement offers something for everyone.

Take your Home & Garden projects to the max!
