Hurricane Sandy Sinks the HMS Bounty

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Former owner Ted Turner says he's "deeply saddened" by the Bounty's loss
  • A deckhand's body has been found and the captain is missing
  • The Coast Guard says 14 rescued crew members are "in good health"
  • The Bounty was en route to St. Petersburg, Florida, when it sank in heavy seas

Have you been affected by Hurricane Sandy? If so, share your images and footage with CNN iReport, but please stay safe.

(CNN) -- Three people washed off their crippled ship and engulfed by Atlantic waters roiled by Hurricane Sandy scrambled for help on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard said, but only one of them made it to safety.

When the HMS Bounty's crew members realized their lives were in danger off the North Carolina coast in the dark morning hours, they made a short journey they hoped they'd never have to take -- to two waiting life rafts.

But only 13 of the 16 people aboard got off the ship safely, initially, and only one of the three washed overboard made it into a raft, Coast Guard Vice Adm. Robert Parker told CNN. That left rescuers scrambling to find them in the frenzied ocean, Parker said.

One of them -- the Bounty's longtime captain, Robin Walbridge -- remained missing as night approached Monday, said Lt. Mike Patterson, a Coast Guard spokesman. The body of the second, deckhand Claudine Christian, was found Monday evening, the Coast Guard announced.

The ship was built for the 1962 film version of "Mutiny on the Bounty," starring Marlon Brando, and appeared in the 2006 blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." It was once owned by America's Cup winner and CNN founder Ted Turner, who acquired it in 1986 along with the rights to the MGM film library.

The 180-foot, three-masted ship, a replica of the famous British vessel, foundered about 90 miles off North Carolina as Sandy's fury churned the Atlantic into 18-foot seas, its owner, Bob Hansen, told CNN affilliate KUSA.

Hansen said Walbridge was attempting to head east, away from the hurricane, when the ship began taking on water.

"At that time it wasn't considered an emergency, even though they had several feet of water inside the boat," Hansen said. "She's a very large ship, and that little bit of water really does not do anything to her. But somehow we lost power in our generator and in our main engines, and as a result, we could not pump any water out of the boat."

As the waves continued to batter the ship, "it just got to the point where she couldn't stay afloat anymore."

CNN meteorologists say the water temperature varies greatly in that part of the ocean because of the gulf stream. So the water could be anywhere from 50 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

All of the crew members were wearing orange survival suits with strobe lights designed to keep them afloat, warm and easy to find.

"But in these conditions, it's very problematic," Parker said, adding that a timely deployment of search-and-rescue aircraft and ships gives the missing a chance.

A C-130 aircraft and a helicopter have been monitoring the area around the shipwreck. Two Coast Guard cutters were en route to the scene to help with search-and-rescue, with one expected to arrive later on Monday and the other expected on Tuesday, Parker said.

Coast Guard helicopters plucked 14 people out of two lifeboats around 6:30 a.m., Petty Officer Brandyn Hill said.

"The first guy we pulled up, he was really happy to see us. That's for sure," said Aviation Survival Technician 2 Randy Haba, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. "We got him up there, and he was all excited and saying, 'That's a good job,' and everything was great. He was just a little cold, but he was good to go."

The life boats were designed to hold 25 people and had canopies for shelter against pelting rain and winds.

All of those rescued arrived at the Coast Guard air station in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and were in good health, Parker said. Initial reports said 17 crew members were aboard, but the Coast Guard later corrected that number.

The Coast Guard said it has "diminished search-and-rescue capabilities" as Category 1 Hurricane Sandy batters the U.S. East Coast. More sea rescues prompted by Sandy were reported in Delaware Bay.

"Among the many troubling reports on the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy, I am deeply saddened to hear that the HMS Bounty was overtaken by the storm," Turner said in a statement Monday night. "As a sailor and former owner of the Bounty, my heart goes out to the families of the missing crew members, and I am truly hopeful for their safe recovery."

The ship departed New London, Connecticut, for St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 25, according to the ship's Facebook page. Facebook postings bearing that date say things such as "I'm sure that Hurricane Sandy will be a major consideration when Bounty leaves for St. Petersburg later today," and "Bounty will be sailing East out to sea before heading South to avoid the brunt of Hurricane Sandy."

The ship was scheduled to arrive at the Pier in St. Petersburg as early as November 7 for a public display on November 10 and 11, the Pier's general manager, Carol Everson, said Monday. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention and Vistors Bureau is promoting "The HMS Bounty Returns To The Pier" on its website.

Everson said it's hard to believe the Bounty, which has docked in St. Petersburg for long stretches since the 1970s, is buried under the ocean.

"It had such a history, not only because of 'Mutiny on the Bounty,' but it's been a great part of St. Petersburg for so many years. It's going to be missed," Everson said. "It had a majestic look with its tall masts. It had an aura about it."

While following the ship's Facebook timeline, you can read a mixture of trepidation and attempts at soothing fears.

On Saturday, this post appeared: "Bounty's current voyage is a calculated decision... NOT AT ALL... irresponsible or with a lack of foresight as some have suggested. The fact of the matter is... A SHIP IS SAFER AT SEA THAN IN PORT!"

No one responded to the contact e-mail or phone number listed on the ship's website and Facebook account.

Sandy is evoking memories of the "nor'easter" that struck off New England in 1991 and inspired the best-selling book and movie "The Perfect Storm."

Ray Leonard, who survived that storm on his sailboat before the Coast Guard rescued him, said being besieged by high winds and waves can be exhausting, but sometimes sailors just have to deal with that physical discomfort.

"You don't really have time to think about much outside, because there's always about six jobs that need doing," Leonard said Monday.

Leonard said he never felt terribly vulnerable in '91. However, he said, Hurricane Sandy's immensity poses more of a quandary for sailors.

"The one I was in was different, because you could do something. In Sandy, you can't do much," Leonard said.

CNN's Belle Reynoso, Thom Patterson, Meridith Edwards, Mike Ahlers, Sean Morris and George Howell contributed to this report.

A satellite image of Sandy is shown at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Early Saturday, the storm was about 335 miles southeast of Charleston, S.C. Tropical storm warnings were issued for parts of Florida's East Coast, along with parts of coastal North and South Carolina and the Bahamas. Tropical storm watches were issued for coastal Georgia and parts of South Carolina, along with parts of Florida and Bermuda. Sandy is projected to hit the Atlantic Coast early Tuesday. (AP Photo/Alan Diaz)

(AP) ? The storm that is threatening 60 million Americans in the eastern third of the nation in just a couple of days with high winds, drenching rains, extreme tides, flooding and probably snow is much more than just an ordinary weather system. It's a freakish and unprecedented monster.

How did it get that way?

Start with Sandy, an ordinary late summer hurricane from the tropics, moving north up the East Coast. Bring in a high pressure ridge of air centered around Greenland that blocks the hurricane's normal out-to-sea path and steers it west toward land.

Add a wintry cold front moving in from the west that helps pull Sandy inland and mix in a blast of Arctic air from the north for one big collision. Add a full moon and its usual effect, driving high tides. Factor in immense waves commonly thrashed up by a huge hurricane plus massive gale-force winds.

Do all that and you get a stitched-together weather monster expected to unleash its power over 800 miles, with predictions in some areas of 12 inches of rain, 2 feet of snow and sustained 40- to 50 mph winds.

"The total is greater than the sum of the individual parts" said Louis Uccellini, the environmental prediction chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologists. "That is exactly what's going on here."

This storm is so dangerous and so unusual because it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both ? part hurricane, part nor'easter, all trouble," Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground, said Saturday.

With Sandy expected to lose tropical characteristics, NOAA is putting up high wind watches and warnings that aren't hurricane or tropical for coastal areas north of North Carolina, causing some television meteorologists to complain that it is all too confusing. Nor is it merely a coastal issue anyway. Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency told reporters Saturday: "This is not a coastal threat alone. This is a very large area. This is going to be well inland."

Uccellini, who estimated that 60 million people will feel the storm's wrath somehow, said: "This storm as it grows and moves back to the coast on Monday and Tuesday, the circulation of this storm will extend all the way from the Midwest, the Ohio Valley, toward the Carolinas up into New England and southern Canada. It's really going to be an expansive storm system."

It's a topsy-turvy storm, too. The far northern areas of the East, around Maine, should get much warmer weather as the storm hits, practically shirt-sleeve weather for early November, Masters and Uccellini said. Around the Mason-Dixon line, look for much cooler temperatures. West Virginia and even as far south as North Carolina could see snow. Lots of it.

It is what NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco meant Thursday when he called it "Frankenstorm" in a forecast, an allusion to Mary Shelley's gothic creature of synthesized elements.

Cisco and others have called this storm unprecedented. Uccellini, who has written histories about winter storms, said the closest analogs are the 1991 Perfect Storm that struck northern New England and a November 1950 storm. But this is likely to be stronger and bigger than the Perfect Storm; it will strike farther south, and affect far more people.

In fact, the location among those with the highest odds for gale-force winds in the country's most populous place: New York City. New York has nearly a 2-in-3 chance of gale force winds by Tuesday afternoon.

One of the major components in the ferocity of the storm is that it is swinging inland ? anywhere from Delaware to New York, but most likely southern New Jersey ? almost a due west turn, which is unusual, Uccellini said. So the worst of the storm surge could be north, not south, of landfall. And that gets right to New York City and its vulnerable subways, which are under increasing risk of flooding, he said.

"There is a potential for a huge mess in New York if this storm surge forecast is right," Masters said.

Add to that the hundreds of miles of waves and the overall intensity of this storm, Uccellini said in an interview, and "we are in the middle of a very serious situation."

Forecasters are far more worried about inland flooding from storm surge than they are about winds.

There are several measures for hurricanes. And one NOAA research tool that measures the intensity of hurricane overall kinetic energy forecasts a 5.2 for Sandy's waves and storm surge damage potential. That's on a scale of 0 to 6, putting it up with historic storms, such as Katrina. It rates a much smaller number for wind.

Because of the mix with the winter storm, the wind won't be as intense as it is near the center of a hurricane. But it will reach for hundreds of miles, spreading the energy further, albeit weaker, meteorologists said.

Uccellini and Masters said they expect the central pressure of the storm to drop to a near record low for the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast for any time of year. That is a big indication of energy and helps power the wind. This puts it on par with the 1938 storm that hit Long Island and New England, killing 800 people, or the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane.

Grading and supporting U.S. education: Study examines consequences of international comparisons

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? K-12 schools in the United States are often criticized for falling behind their counterparts in other countries, but a new Cornell University study suggests that this "negative spin" does not increase public support for spending more to improve the nation's schools.

Presidential hopefuls, local school board candidates, and even companies like Exxon Mobil stress the need to have the best education system in the world to be competitive in the global economy. President Obama's education issue webpage, for example, begins with the statement, "To prepare Americans for the jobs of the future and help restore middle-class security, we have to out-educate the world and that starts with the school system" (http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/education). And, in the first presidential debate, Mitt Romney unveiled a five point jobs plan for 70 million television viewers. Romney presented "Number three" as "Make sure our people have the skills they need to succeed and the best schools in the world. We're a far way from that now."

"But my research concludes that comments such as Romney's erode support for public schools and decrease interest in spending additional money to improve them," said Stephen Morgan, Cornell professor of sociology and lead author of the study "The Consequences of International Comparisons for Public Support of K-12 Education," published in the latest issue of the journal Educational Researcher.

With results from a randomized experiment on a nationally representative sample of adults (aged 18 to 93), the study concludes that statements such as these convince approximately seven percent of adults to lower their grades for public schools in their own communities from "A" or "B" to "C," "D," or "Fail." And, when asked whether we spend enough money on improving the nation's schools, a similar percentage of respondents shifts from the position that we spend "too little" toward "about the right amount" or "too much." Overall, "people think worse of their schools, but there is no evidence that they are then convinced to spend more money to fix them," said Morgan.

The percentage of the national sample that is shifted by international competitiveness concerns may be modest, "but seven percent could be enough to flip the outcome of a school levy vote or a local election," said Morgan.

Morgan says that international comparisons shouldn't necessarily be avoided altogether, especially by candidates or interest groups that favor cost-neutral reforms. And they are probably effective in generating interest in education reform in general. "I'd guess that they are partly responsible for convincing some of my own students to care about educational reform and to apply to programs like Teach For America," said Morgan.

Maras Gyros & Grill - Kalofagas - Greek Food & Beyond

A friend of mine told that a new Gyro joint opened on the Danforth and I immediately headed into Greektown to check this new spot. After a spate of Greek shops having closed, this news made me smile. I?m optimistic.

Maras Gyro & Grill is located on the south side of the Danforth, just west of Logan. The space is clean, newly renovated and the owner Christos (Maras) insistes everything on the menu is housemade. Like the name of the shop, the focus is Gyro ? both pork and chicken and they also offer both varities of meat in souvlaki form.

Pork Gyro

Souvlaki on a stick, Gyro on a vertical rotisserie. Maras? pork is made of pork butt and the chicken comes for leg and thigh meat You won?t get any of that ?Chicago style?? mystery meat here. Greek food has morphed into many things outside of Greece ? some good, some bad. Forget that mystery-meat crap. Gyro in Greece is made of real, identifiable meat and that?s what Maras offers.

The pork tastes like pork and the chicken tastes like chicken, seasoned well but not with too much spices to cover up the meat. With pork butt and chicken leg and thigh used for both Gyro and souvlaki?you?re gonna get juicy, succulent meat.

The fries are hand cut on the premise and fried to order. The Tzatziki is made daily with strained Greek yogurt, garlic, wine vinegar, olive oil and some dill.

chicken Gyro

I was delighted to taste (and find out) that Maras? Greek Salad is made with Greek Feta cheese, ripe tomatoes, Greek olive oil, Kalamata olives and Greek olive oil.

If I haven?t convinced you to head over to Maras yet, head over to try one of the many alcoholic, non-alcoholic beverages imported from Greece. There?s Ivi soft drinks, still and sparkling water, Greek wine.

Maras is located at 467 Danforth Ave., near Chester subway and open daily. Call for hours at 416-778-6880.

On U.S. Farms, Deaths in Silos Persist

E. Jason Wambsgans/Chicago Tribune

The grain-elevator complex in Mount Carroll, Ill., where two teenage boys died and another was injured while working in July 2010.

STERLING, Mich. ? Tommy Osier, 18, a popular but indifferent student, was still a year from graduating from high school, and that was no sure thing. Farm work paid him $7.40 an hour, taught him discipline and gave him new skills. He had begun talking about making a life in farming.

But he hated the chore he drew on Memorial Day of last year, working inside the silo at Pine Grove Farm. The corn was damp and crusted. It tended to hang up on the sides of the old six-story cement bin and had to be busted up with a steel rod before it would cascade to the bottom to be shoveled out.

That morning, just after 9, the phone rang in the Osier home. ?Tommy?s in the silo,? his sister relayed to their mother, Linda, unsure of what it meant.

Ms. Osier grew up on a hog farm and knew right away. ?He?s dead,? she said, slumping to the floor. ?Tommy?s dead.?

Even as the rate of serious injury and fatalities on American farms has fallen, the number of workers dying by entrapment in grain bins and silos has remained stubbornly steady. The annual number of such accidents rose throughout the past decade, reaching a peak of at least 26 deaths in 2010, before dropping somewhat since.

Silos teeming with corn, wheat or soybeans become death traps when grain cascades out of control, asphyxiating or crushing their victims. Since 2007, 80 farmworkers have died in silo accidents; 14 of them were teenage boys.

The deaths are horrific and virtually all preventable.

Experts say the continuing rate of silo deaths is due in part to the huge amount of corn being produced and stored in the United States to meet the global demand for food, feed and, increasingly, ethanol-based fuel.

That the deaths persist reveals continuing flaws in the enforcement of worker safety laws and weaknesses in rules meant to protect the youngest farmworkers. Nearly 20 percent of all serious grain bin accidents involve workers under the age of 20.

Last year, the Labor Department proposed new regulations aimed at tightening protections for children doing farm work.

The proposed federal regulations would have prohibited children under 18 from working in large commercial grain bins, silos or other enclosed spaces. But the Obama administration, sensitive to Republican charges that it was choking the economy with expensive regulations, pulled back the proposed rules this year in the face of furious farm-state objections.

Even those rules would not have covered working conditions on family farms and small operations like the one where Tommy Osier died and which account for 70 percent of grain entrapment accidents. Experts on farm safety say that most farmers are aware of the hazards of sending someone into a bin full of unstable grain, but often lack the equipment or training to protect their workers against an avalanche.

?The concept of walking down the grain should be avoided at all costs,? said Wayne Bauer, the safety director at the Star of the West Milling Company in Frankenmuth, Mich., which operates grain elevators in five states. ?And people sending kids into spaces where they have no business being deserve to be fined.?

Dave Schwab, who operated the farm where Tommy Osier died, told investigators that he knew the air inside silos could be toxic and combustible, but that he was unaware of the dangers of entrapment in cascading corn. He did not have air-monitoring or rescue equipment at the farm, but investigators found no evidence that he willfully flouted state rules for sending workers into confined spaces.

?They Didn?t Have a Clue?

Wyatt Whitebread, 14, had been on the job for just two weeks at a commercial grain-elevator complex in Mount Carroll, Ill., when he was sent into a 500,000-bushel storage tower to loosen corn kernels that were sticking to the side. Bin No. 9 was one of more than a dozen buildings on the property owned and operated by Haasbach L.L.C.

Shortly after he and other teenage workers entered the bin on July 10, 2010, a manager at the base opened two floor holes to speed the flow of the grain. The sudden action dragged Wyatt, who was walking atop the corn to help it flow, toward the floor of the bin, engulfing him under the corn as he screamed for help. Alejandro Pacas, 19, who had joined the work crew the day before, rushed over to aid him and was quickly entrapped himself. Both teenagers died in seconds.

Seth Berkman and Jake Rosenwasser contributed reporting from New York.

St. Ann Medical and Dental Services aim for federal designation ...

TERRE HAUTE ? St. Ann Medical and Dental Services is pursuing the necessary steps to become a federally designated community health center, although it?s a very competitive process.

Also, there hasn?t been an opportunity to apply for the designation since November 2010, clinic officials say. They hope that changes next year.

If it achieved that designation, the clinic would be eligible for federal funding and it also would be able to bill Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance.

?We?re moving along down the road. We have a checklist and we?re trying to get that done,? said Sister Lawrence Ann Liston, the health clinic administrator.

The clinic has incorporated as the Wabash Valley Health Center, but still does business as St. Ann Medical/Dental Services. It has a transition board and it sent out a Medicare application this week; a Medicaid application also is being prepared.

On Friday, Liston gave Congressman Joe Donnelly a tour of the clinic, located at 1436 Locust St. Donnelly, a Democrat representing Indiana?s 2nd Congressional District, is running for U.S. Senate against state treasurer and Republican, Richard Mourdock.

Also present during the tour was Dr. Jim Turner, the clinic?s volunteer medical director. ?We?d like any advice he [Donnelly] might have on helping us with our application? to become a Federally Qualified Health Center [FQHC], Turner said.

The process ?is very competitive,? Turner said. He?s heard that next year, only 25 new sites may be approved nationwide, and Liston understands the focus may be on serving the homeless and immigrants.

The clinic, which serves uninsured individuals who would not otherwise have access to health and dental services, has had 73,331 visits since it opened 15 years ago.

This past fiscal year, it registered 9,386 visits with 638 being new. While it has five full-time and 13 part-time paid staff, it also had 157 volunteers who recorded 15,695 hours of service valued at $634,087. It also is supported by grants and donations.

Liston noted that in the first three months of this fiscal year, the clinic is $18,000 in the red, something she hasn?t encountered in her tenure there.

?We?ve had to buy some things we haven?t traditionally had to buy,? Turner said, including some expensive medications.

In recent years, pharmaceutical companies that used to provide medication assistance and free medicine ?more and more are not doing that,? Turner said.

Federally Qualified Health Centers must serve a high-needs, underserved community, including those with high poverty rates; provide health care to all, regardless of ability to pay; provide comprehensive health care services; and must be governed by a community board.

To become a community health center, there would have to be a federal designation and a lengthy application.

A community health center would be a ?paradigm shift? for St. Ann?s, Turner has said. It would hopefully benefit from federal dollars through health care reform, and it would be able to bill Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance.

Now, St. Ann?s operates primarily through donations and grants.

Community health centers can save state and federal governments health care costs because they provide preventive services that keep low-income patients out of emergency rooms.

Turner also views it as an ?engine for economic development? because it would create many new jobs and require a wide range of medical professionals as well as support staff.

St. Ann?s would continue to be a training ground for an increasing number of students training in health care occupations through Indiana State University and the IU School of Medicine in Terre Haute, which now has 72 medical students, Turner said.

It also is a teaching site for the Union Hospital Family Medicine residency.

St. Ann?s is a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Providence.

The FQHCs have been around for many years. Currently, there are more than 8,000 in the United States, and the closest one to Terre Haute is in Clinton.

At the end of his tour, and after meeting with St. Ann Clinic leaders, Donnelly told them if he wins the race for Senate, ?I?ll be back to see what we can do? to assist with efforts to become an FQHC.

Energy Drink Stocks: Who is At Risk? KO, PEP, MNST, REED & JSDA

On Monday, energy drink stock Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST) was sinking after an article appeared in the New York Times reported that five people may have died over the past three years after drinking Monster Energy with the news also appearing to impact other small cap beverage stocks like Reed's, Inc. (NASDAQ: REED) and Jones Soda Co. (PINK: JSDA) plus its worth remembering that softdrink giants like The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) and PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE: PEP) have also gotten into (or have tried to get into) the energy beverage business. On the other hand, one also has to be skeptical about anything the New York Times produces on this matter as its important to remember that softdrink makers like The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo, Inc. are increasingly on the radar screens of the food police (like the NY Times) and trial lawyers who would love to go after them (like they did with the tobacco industry) for their sugary caffeinated beverages on health grounds. Nevertheless, here is a quick look at energy drink stocks Monster Beverage (MNST) Reed's, Inc. (REED) and Jones Soda Co. (JSDA) and what risks they pose to investors:

Monster Beverage (NASDAQ: MNST). A maker of energy drinks, natural soft drinks and fruit drinks, Monster Beverage had around a third of the $31.9 billion energy drink market as of earlier this year. According to the New York Times, there has been a lawsuit brought by the mother of a 14-year-old girl who died last December from a heart arrhythmia after drinking large cans of Monster Energy on two consecutive days. However, the New York Times was also forced to concede that its not known if other factors like alcohol or drugs were at play nor do the reports prove any link between Monster Beverage?s Monster Energy drink and the reported deaths or other health problems. Nevertheless and on Monday, Monster Beverage sank 14.2% to $45.73 (MNST has a 52 week trading range of $40.88 to $83.96 a share) for a market cap of $8.07 billion plus the stock is down 1.1% since the start of the year and up 34.8% over the past five years. Moreover and with Monster Beverage having some $870.23 million in cash and short-term investments on its balance sheet at the end of June (plus insurance to cover lawsuits and product liability claims), there are probably plenty of lawyers just salivating at the prospect of getting a piece of that ? meaning the lawsuit mentioned by the New York Times is far from the last one that will no doubt be brought against the company.

Reed's, Inc. (NASDAQ: REED). As a developer, manufacturer, marketer and seller of natural non-alcoholic and new age beverages, candies and ice creams, Reed's, Inc. is not exactly an energy drink stocks. Nevertheless and on Monday, Reed's, Inc. fell 2.01% (the second worst non-OTC beverage stock performer after Monster Beverage) to $7.82 (REED has a 52 week trading range of $1.10 to $8.82 a share) for a market cap of $87.99 million but the stock is still up 604.5% since the start of the year and up 12.5% over the past five years. A quick look at Reed?s portfolio reveals that its only real energy drink is its Natural Energy Elixir - a next generation energy drink infused with all natural ingredients that incorporates ginger, green tea, goji, jiaogulan, camu camu, ginseng, L-Theanine and B vitamins. That one drink is not a reason to panic. Hence, I suspect that some investors may have overreacted if they sold Reed's, Inc. on Monday over the Monster Beverage news.

Jones Soda Co. (PINK: JSDA). A developer, producer, marketer and distributer of a range of beverages, Jones Soda offers Jones Soda (a carbonated soft drink), Jones Zilch (with zero calories), WhoopAss Energy Drink (an energy supplement drink) and WhoopAss Zero Energy Drink (with zero sugar). Hence and on Monday, Jones Soda fell 4.59% to $0.26 (JSDA has a 52 week trading range of $0.23 to $0.89 a share) for a market cap of $10.2 million plus the stock is down 31.6% since the start of the year and down 97.4% over the past five years. Jones Soda was delisted from NASDAQ about a month ago for trading under $1 and the company did not appeal the decision but there are signs that the company is turning around. Back in August, Jones Soda reported a 7% revenue rise to $5.3 million while its net loss of $459,000 was lower than the net loss of $1.8 million reported for the same period last year thanks to expense reduction efforts begun at the beginning of the year and "a more disciplined approach to growing revenue.? However and the last thing Jones Soda needs right now is for the energy drink business to be hit with bad publicity. Moreover and with just $2.5 million in cash on the books at the end of June, it does not exactly have deep pockets to fall back on or to pay off lawyers and their clients with.

The Bottom Line. So should investors be worried about energy drink stocks? Maybe as there are already congressional calls for greater regulation of the industry but that might just mean more disclosure on cans and bottles about what?s in the drink ? not really a big deal. On the other hand, what should worry investors in Monster Beverage (MNST), Jones Soda Co. (JSDA), The Coca-Cola Company (KO) and PepsiCo, Inc. (PEP) but less so with Reed's, Inc. (REED) given its focus are the trial lawyers swopping in and trying to make a quick buck.

Jim Rickards on Currency Wars - Chicago Gold and Silver Investing ...

Summary of Rickards Interview starting at 12:25.

  • China and Brazil are inflating their currency. To handle that, the United States will keep inflating it's currency.
  • US and Europe (minus England) has more than enough gold to be able to handle a currency war.
  • The recent recession is lasting so long because of the manipulation. That is more ease, more printing. A business will not commit any capital right now because of uncertainty. We could see decades of low or sub par growth due to what he calls regine uncertainty. Businesses are not investing until they see more certainty in the market and with politicians who keep changing. They do not what will happen in taxes, with heath care costs, monetary growth. Until we see more certainty there will be either low or no growth.
  • What got us out of depression (until 1946) was in 1946 when Republicans took Congress and lowered taxes. The depression last 10 years, so long.
  • Current Currency Wars started in 2009 with G20. Until 2 days ago, neither Fed or Treasury admitted it publicly until recently. We are going to keep printing the dollar to prevent your currency appreciating. Bernake wants coutries to increase the value of their currency which in turn lowers the value of the dollar or suffer inflation because we are goign to keep printing until you do so. We are going to lower the exchange rate of the dollar.
  • Inflation has been showing in foreign countries, but not in the US yet. It is showing up abroad more because China and Brazil are printing more. Inflation will come back to the US and Bernake wants it. They want negative real rates, they want to lower the debt by reinflating it away. They want people to spend money now thinking, people will spend due to threat of inflation.
  • In a free market prices are a way of keeping allocation of capital straight. The numbers are affected in that inputs are manipulated by government. We have cheapening of the dollar in the US. The economy of Ohio is doing well because the inputs are being changed there to help political candidates in the upcoming election.

Obama slams Romney on tax rate, wealth, "47 percent"

U.S. President Obama gestures towards Republican presidential nominee Romney as he answers a question during the second U.S. presidential campaign debate in Hempstead

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In what amounted to a do-over on the subject of wealth and fairness, President Barack Obama took aim on Tuesday night at Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's personal finances, his tax plan and his once-private comment about the "47 percent" of Americans who don't pay income taxes.

Obama's aggressive approach on those issues contrasted sharply with his restraint in their first matchup in Denver on October 3, when he avoided entirely the now-famous 47 percent comment, taped at a fundraiser in May.

Obama zeroed in on Romney's 14 percent tax rate, the roughly $20 million he earned in a recent year and his investments in China. He cheekily joked during their second debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, that Romney's pension was likely fatter than his.

"When he said behind closed doors that 47 percent of the country considered themselves victims, who refuse personal responsibility, think about who he was talking about," Obama said Tuesday, noting many in that group who are the elderly, veterans and students.

And once again, he went after Romney's tax plans which the president said favored the rich.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and co-founder of investment firm Bain Capital, defended his proposal to slash all Americans' tax rates by 20 percent.

Romney's own - albeit indirect - reference to the 47 percent remarks came as he responded to a question about misperceptions held about him. He said he cared "about 100 percent of the American people. I want 100 percent of the American people to have a bright and prosperous future."

Romney also pledged that the top 5 percent wealthiest Americans would continue to pay 60 percent of all federal income taxes.

That is roughly the amount of federal income taxes that the richest 5 percent pay, according to the Tax Policy Center.

The 47 percent figure also comes from that research group, although it has been widely noted that many of those individuals are either senior citizens or the working poor using popular tax credits.

Sticking to his previous tax policy statements, Romney pledged to cut taxes for the middle class but keep the wealthy paying the same share of taxes.

One undecided voter, among those selected to question the candidates Tuesday night, asked Romney how he would fund the cut, reflecting a frequent criticism of his proposal.

"I'm going to bring rates down across the board for everybody, but I'm going to limit deductions and exemptions and credits, particularly for people at the high end," Romney said.

During a squabble about whether Romney had investments in Chinese companies, Romney said his investments were managed by a blind trust.

Romney asked Obama if he knew what was in his retirement plan.

"It's not as big as yours," Obama said, in a dig at Romney's wealth.

We Don't Need No Nutrition Education - Health Habits

As a big fitness/nutrition geek, I am constantly consuming the latest information on how to improve the health of our overweight & inactive society.

And when it comes to improving public health, the experts are forever saying that it all comes down to education.

If only ?they? could teach ?us? how to?

  • Eat healthier
  • Move healthier
  • Live healthier

?we would all take that knowledge?and stop eating junk food while watching re-runs of ?Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Too bad they?re wrong.

In this new study, researchers presented 124 test with a fake food buffet consisting of 55 replica food items.

  • Participants in the control group were instructed to serve themselves a meal, as they would normally eat from the given selections.
  • Participants in the instruction group were asked to select a healthy, balanced meal.
  • People in the instruction + information?group were also instructed to select a healthy meal, but in addition, they received nutrition information based on the Swiss Food Guide Pyramid.

The results?

  • Both the instruction group AND the?instruction + information group reduced their consumption of sweets & desserts.
  • Both the instruction group AND the instruction + information group increased their consumption of fruit.
  • No other food categories (including vegetables) were significantly altered.
  • There was very little caloric difference between the meals of all 3 groups
  • Both the instruction group AND the instruction + information group perceived their meals as healthy
  • The control group perceived their meal as less healthy
  • All 3 groups considered their chosen meals equally tasty

Their Conclusions

  • When people aim to compose a healthy meal, they replace the dessert with a fruit.
  • Nutritional information on portion sizes fails to increase the amount of vegetables in a meal
  • People, who were asked to choose a healthy meal, chose meals that they perceived as similarly tasty.

My Conclusions

  1. We like to eat tasty food?and we?re not willing to abandon yummy to get healthy
  2. We already know which foods are healthy and which are unhealthy
  3. We need more nutrition motivation and less nutrition education.

So, where do we go from here?

  • How do we motivate ourselves to eat healthier???

That?s the billion dollar question.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ...

When you're a newb, securities trading can feel like a disconcerting prospect. With all of the stories and misunderstandings about the stockmarket, many of us are too frightened to even start. Even the outwardly easy step of finding a stockbroker can frighten green backers.

There are numerous calls to make on the way, but do not let them scare you. This has 2 implications-you can sell stock that you think is over valued and buy stock that you suspect is under valued. This brings us to the second major beliefs in fundamental research. As a worth financier, you may naturally be looking to choose stocks that trade below what you suspect is the natural price and then expect the share price to fix itself upwards. The 2 doubtful factors here on the precision of your inbuilt price guess and the time taken for the share price correction. So we see that it's possible to be a successful investor by utilizing a clever mixture of qualitative and quantitative research. * Learning the language connected with penny shares is extremely important. * Although the penny market is low cost compared with other stocks you can still make a respectable profit that will make a contribution for both you and your family so far as earnings to aid in paying for your debts or building toward your retirement. As the more well capable you are on the language then you may get even more successful. An advantage of the stockmarket dealing software is the incontrovertible fact that they're programmed to recognise the trends and advise you of which stocks are probably going to be good to make an investment in.
