New breast cancer clues found in gene analysis

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Scientists reported Sunday that they have completed a major analysis of the genetics of breast cancer, finding four major classes of the disease. They hope their work will lead to more effective treatments, perhaps with some drugs already in use.

The new finding offers hints that one type of breast cancer might be vulnerable to drugs that already work against ovarian cancer.

The study, published online Sunday by the journal Nature, is the latest example of research into the biological details of tumors, rather than focusing primarily on where cancer arises in the body.

The hope is that such research can reveal cancer's genetic weaknesses for better drug targeting.

"With this study, we're one giant step closer to understanding the genetic origins of the four major subtypes of breast cancer," Dr. Matthew Ellis of the Washington University School of Medicine said in a statement. He is a co-leader of the research.

"Now we can investigate which drugs work best for patients based on the genetic profiles of their tumors," he said.

The researchers analyzed DNA of breast cancer tumors from 825 patients, looking for abnormalities. Altogether, they reported, breast cancers appear to fall into four main classes when viewed in this way.

One class showed similarities to ovarian cancers, suggesting it may be driven by similar biological developments.

"It's clear they are genetically more similar to ovarian tumors than to other breast cancers," Ellis said. "Whether they can be treated the same way is an intriguing possibility that needs to be explored."

The report is the latest from the Cancer Genome Atlas, a federally funded project that has produced similar analyses for brain, colorectal, lung, and ovarian cancers.

Doing the right thing at the right time ? Business Management Daily ...

Not all hours are created equally, observes author and speaker Tom Searcy. The secret is to review your calendar and make sure you?re doing the right things at the right times. His tips can help a busy administrative professional bring order to his or her schedule, as well as improve the boss?s effectiveness.

???Figure out your time. Rank your activities over the course of the week into three categories: High Value, Low Value and No Value, Searcy advises. The value standard is what produces the most value for you or your boss. ?Most of us do not think about our jobs as what we get done, but rather what we do," Searcy says. ?But highly productive people think in outcomes first and activities second.?

What if you could move one hour per day out of No Value into Low Value, and one hour from Low to High Value? That would change your value curve in a big way over the course of a year.

??Cut your time wasters. Look at your Low Value and No Value categories. These probably include things like regularly scheduled meetings, email shuffling and mandatory events. You want to trade these things for activities that generate revenue or provide service for your boss.

So look at those Low or No Value activities and determine if you can consolidate, automate, delegate or eliminate them. For example, perhaps reports can be made available online rather than hand-generated, printed and distributed.

??Track, check and protect. ?You have to track how you spend your time on a regular basis,? says Searcy, who recommends weekly. ?Then check it against your goals of value. Finally, you have to be diligent in protecting your time from the insidious virus of bureaucratic creep.?

? Adapted from ?Protect the 2 hours that mean the most,? Tom Searcy, Inc.com.

Clinton faces criticism as Asia tour stops in China - Wed, 05 Sep 2012 PST

Hillary Clinton is in Beijing to press Chinese authorities to agree to peacefully resolve disputes with their smaller?neighbors.

BEIJING ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton flew into a storm of criticism in Beijing on Tuesday in the midst of a six-nation tour perceived by China as aimed at curbing its influence in?Asia.

?Many Chinese people dislike Hillary Clinton,? the often-acerbic Communist Party-controlled Global Times newspaper stated in an editorial. ?She has brought new and extremely profound mutual distrust between the mainstream societies of the two?countries.?

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei was more polite, saying at a briefing in advance of Clinton?s arrival late Tuesday, ?We hope the U.S. side will keep its commitment and make efforts that help, rather than harm, regional peace and?stability.?

High on the agenda in Beijing are the myriad of disputes between China and neighbors ? Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia ? over uninhabited islets and fishing?waters.

Clinton has proposed a code of conduct to be used as a mechanism to resolve such disputes through the Association of South East Asian Nations. Such a code would ?literally calm the waters,? Clinton said in Jakarta, Indonesia, ahead of her flight to?China.

Beijing has rejected what it calls U.S. meddling in the conflicts, apparently believing it has more clout asserting its claims bilaterally with its?neighbors.

?We feel there are too many different countries ganging up on us. The U.S. is playing the role of the aggressor here. It is a sign of their insecurity in the global arena,? said Xu Guangyu, a retired military officer and analyst for the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association in?Beijing.

China?s irritation with Clinton has been building for months. The Chinese are still simmering over remarks she made over the summer during a tour of Africa in which, without mentioning China by name, she urged nations on the continent to deal only with pro-democracy foreign?powers.

Clinton comes to Beijing in the middle of an 11-day tour designed to show the flag in a region where China?s influence ? and money ? increasingly hold sway. It began with an improbable visit to the tiny Cook Islands (population 13,000) and includes stops in Indonesia, East Timor, Brunei and the Russian Far?East.

Samantha Stosur wary of Laura Robson ? Tennis News | bettor.com

Samantha Stosur wary of Laura Robson ? Tennis News

World number seven, Samantha Stosur, has a very tricky task ahead of her at the hard courts of New York. She is up against the successive upset registrar, Laura Robson, who is just 18 years of age and belongs to Great Britain.

Robson outsmarted the former world number one, Kim Clijsters, to end her career in the second round of the US Open Championship. She locked horns with the Chinese number one, Li Na, and smothered her away in three sets that was another eye-startling result for her. She is absolutely terrifying for the top seeds and up next is the defending champion from Australian, Stosur, who is wary of her as well.

The giant-killer has nothing to lose at all whilst the Aussie star has a lot on the stake when she squares off against Robson. So, the attitude of going out and playing the best tennis with no regrets can always help in mounting pressure over the rival who has a lot of points to save in this tournament. It will be a trick task for the 28-year-old Aussie but she is capable of handling such upset queens. However, the chances of the Briton are definitely up after the two back-to-back stunning performances.

Stosur commented about the clash with Robson, ?It can be a very tricky match. She's probably got nothing to lose. She's had two of probably the best wins of her career, and she's starting to maybe live up to some of that potential that people have talked about from when she won junior Wimbledon when she was 14. Like I said, you can't go into it lightly. You've got to be aware that she's going to come out swinging maybe and have that confidence behind her, but you've got to stick to your own guns - play the way that you need to play.?

The contest will begin on the eve of Sunday and mammoth crowd is expected at the centre court of flushing meadows where the defending champ will take on the upcoming superstar. Robson has already made her country proud and she can do wonders with a hat-trick of upsets on Sunday.

RIM details BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10: IT guys get a single web console for their various tools

We already knew that RIM was readying a new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Server to ship alongside the first BB10 devices in early 2013. Today, the company detailed the package, formally known as BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. The big story here is that already-existing IT tools like BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service will be accessible from a single web console. The company also clarified that BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service can run off separate servers, or just one. Take note, though, that the older BES 5+ will still need its own server for the time being. As we previously reported, too, the newest version of BES will offer legacy support to older devices -- specifically, it can support PlayBook tablets, phones running BlackBerry 7 OS or higher as well as iOS and Android devices.
